Jab We did Nothing..
It took me a little while to realize that the true idea behind trying to capture 25 incidences, was to get me start writing :) True enough, I have penned down what came to my mind..And now I feel its time to move beyond just capturing incidences-to pen down my thoughts..
As a first, here is something that I wrote a year back for the HR Magazine in our company..I thank Ria who pushed me into writing again after ages for the Magazine..

If you spend quality time for the
society (I mean the world outside your family, office, friends), if you have
participated in social causes (I mean, not only a walk for people against
cancer, but staying away from the killer tobacco), if you have done anything at
all that gave you that satisfaction of ‘having done my part’, then move on…the
below is not meant for you!!
I was watching the movie “Wall-E” one
of the wonderful animation movies from Disney, Pixar studios. I was in my
hostel, with my friends, eating junk and watching the movie at 1 am. There was
something that bothered me after the movie, well, not just one but too many—
1. I was watching the movie in a
pirated DVD! Which meant a loss to the producer, I kind of swallowed his
profits!
2. Watching a movie at 1 am which is totally against my biological
system and I am forcing myself to get used to things which I consciously know
is going to break my system!
Well, this is not what bothered me after
watching the movie… look at what is being projected as a cause of human being
enjoying ‘luxuries’. The movie projects a generation which makes our dear other
Earth unfit to live because of the burden we have become to her and the whole
population moves to space. Generations to come, people forget about poor Mother
Earth and alas start living in the new luxury, where you do not have to walk, or
even move your hand for anything- you have the MACHINES you want at your
disposal. Though the story line may sound a bit over reality there is a
lingering thought that we are somewhere moving to the same.
I can point few incidences for you to
think. We all are very much aware on “water” the most precious resource, and
thanks to Aamir Khan’s ‘Satyameva Jayate’ (I am not an Amir Khan fan to say
this, don’t read me wrong), this was the talk in one of his episodes. Think...
how many of us open the water tap while brushing our teeth, dreaming or
pondering over the the previous night’s dream, thinking what to do at work, thinking
what to cook, thinking if I should really wake up or go back to bed! Alas,
while you are lost in your thoughts, the elixir of life is flowing down the
drain!
When it comes to your usual morning
ritual of taking bath, have you ever wondered how much of water you waste
there? It’s of course a matter of
cleanliness, but if you can just close the shower and fill one bucket of water
and use it, you actually save water! There are many other ways to save the
precious liquid, we are all educated to know what “rain water harvesting” is
but JAB WE DID NOTHING!
Think of the amount of Garbage that
you throw. The Government has realized a bit late, on the plastic bag front!
Now, how many of us do carry a bag while we go shopping? You are just ready to
shell that extra penny for a plastic cover, who wants to carry a bag while
shopping? It doesn’t look so cool, does it?
Think about one birthday party that
you arrange, you spend on toffees and yeah there you add to the garbage (plus
adding to your calories), you spend on a ‘treat’ and half of which goes to the
drain or who knows whether it is served fresh in another customer’s plate! (you
are lucky if you have that one friend who ensures all the plate is clean).
We can pick incidences from our day to
life.Look at how selfish a life we have been living. When we waste that one
morsel of food do we ever think of the thousands of people who die of
starvation! When we spend so extravagantly do we think about the people who
live on the platforms! All we know is to blame the Government, for not removing
poverty, for not eradicating caste system, for not addressing water scarcity
and the list goes on.
I can write about so many things, that
all of us have been contributing directly or indirectly which we are
consciously aware is harmful to Mother Nature. Unfortunately we do not have the
time or the patience to give a second thought to such things. I am suddenly
worried if I am one among that generation in the movie who is responsible for
making the earth unfit to live!
I was a part of the generation that
did nothing for the society. Somehow the movie helped me to change my ways. I
have not done something great. All I did was, I stopped doing things which gave
me this conscious prick that I am doing something wrong. I still remember
running behind the toffee cover which I threw on the road instead of putting in
the Garbage bin! I carry a bigger bag when I go shopping and I make sure to
carry a cloth bag while I go for grocery purchase and I still feel cool about
it!
Change starts from our actions, rather
than blaming any and pointing fingers, (which is so convenient!) start that
small thing of closing your water tap when not in use, fixing the leak in the
tap and yes carry a bag while you go shopping!
JAB WE CAN DO SOMETHING!!
