Onam- year 2004!
Onam is a season of celebration for all Keralites..It marks the homecoming of Mythical King 'Mahabali/ Maveli Thamburan' who we consider as our King. While there are so many elements marking the celebration of Onam, what comes to my mind is the Ona pookalam and the heart filling lunch with a spread of 17 dishes! Onam is sure an occasion to celebrate for us since the entire neighborhood and Friends and well wishers always join us for the magnificent lunch.
Year 2004, was no different. My brother had his internal exams to take, and so he left home mentioning that his friends would join for lunch as well. Amma started her magic work in the Kitchen while Appa, Meeche (my sis) and myself were helping her. 1'o clock the dishes were all done and set and in came bro and his group of friends- 7 people.
We started the first pandhi, and served food to the future Engineers of the country who were extra hungry after taking up the torment of exams! We realized that food might get over by next pandhi, but since there were not many to join, we were sure we could manage. By the time the first batch was to get over, in came the next batch of Anna's friends (we later realised that someone in the first batch had called up fellow people and informed about the stupendous lunch). There were 10 and now the big challenge. Master chef Amma, ran to the kitchen since the Sambar with the proper mix of Coconut and Dhal was soon getting over..
She gave orders to the other chef- Meeche and Appa, while me and Anna stayed back to serve the pandhi and Sambar was the first item to be served! Amma came up with this instant Sambar receipe and hot Sambar was ready in no time. The pandhi went on till 3 pm! And surprisingly we managed the crowd of 30 people who had come home for lunch.
I learnt the Principles of Management in that little kitchen and Sadhya we arranged, which I later read in my text books during my MBA days..I learnt from Amma the art of making the best use of resources available, the art to handle a crisis and yes, her leadership!
Vive!!
