The Element- How finding your Passion changes Everything!
I am a novice reader*, I read any fiction that is fascinating to my creative wing. Well, Srik (my new boss) started introducing me to the amazing world of Non-fiction. My first was the "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell which he gifted me for my birthday. I never imagined even in my wildest dreams that I would read Non-fiction with the same interest (or rather a little more?) as Fiction and trust me, I was curious what next when I had to put the book down! I was so absorbed into Non Fiction. During my many coffee chats with Srik, I happened to discuss with him about Passion, and my worry if I am in the right profession. Bingo, the next day I had this brilliant book "The Element- How finding your Passion changes Everything" by Ken Robinson in my hand. The book did not intrigue my interest to start reading it right away because of it's not so attractive outer cover. I did realize the true meaning of "Do not judge a book by its cover". After almost a weeks time, I just started reading the book which was just there in my laptop bag during my travel to work.
Page 1,2,3...God, I was in a new world! Ken was taking me along in his miraculous words, on a whole new dimension of Passion, quoting real examples from life! Did I think Meg Ryan had stage fear, Paul Mc Cartney did not know to read from notes, or for that snooker player (sorry, I am bad at remembering names) who practiced 16 hours continuously without realizing that she was spending so much time. This is hardly a handful of people whom Ken has quoted in this book. Well, what made these people to be what they are today? They found their Passion! They are in their Zone when they do their Passion. This book is sheer brilliance. And the most intriguing thought that I felt when I read this book- you do not have to have Passion for doing just one thing, you can have a Passion towards more than one. Also, the importance of being creative. How being Creative adds more to what you are doing. While I was thinking the book is all about people who found their passion, in came the climax like how they say- A twist in the story!
Ken points out how flawed (may be ridiculous!)our education system is. How it cuts down on the creativity of a person! Our current system is based more on a manufacturing sector which was yes predominant in the 18th Century. Here is a quote from the book,
“We have to go from what is essentially an industrial model of education, a manufacturing model, which is based on linearity and conformity and batching people. We have to move to a model that is based more on principles of agriculture. We have to recognize that human flourishing is not a mechanical process; it's an organic process. And you cannot predict the outcome of human development. All you can do, like a farmer, is create the conditions under which they will begin to flourish.”
Have we ever thought about this before?! I definitely haven't!
“The Element is about discovering your self, and you can't do this if you're trapped in a compulsion to conform. You can't be yourself in a swarm.”
It's a brilliant book with a whole new perspective on the way you think! Atleast for me, Ken did help me find what my Passion is, is still helping me find more and oh yeah, he gave me a whole new perspective of the way I look at life itself! :)
Vive!!
ME MYSELF :)
*PS- on the novice reader part, I always thought I was a great reader until I stumbled upon the world of Non-fiction. I realise now what I had read so far was not even a drop in an ocean
