Do Employees leave the organisation/ the manager

I have been writing on general topics, but the HR Professional in me has once peeped her head to write on this enduring thing of 'winning employees heart and mind'. What prompted me to write this is when I found myself put in a situation which made me realize what this actually means..So here it is..

I took a really long time to pen down something in my blog post. Reason being, I was job hunting. I desperately wanted to change my job, move to a new organization, I wanted a change in the more or less routine things I was currently doing at work. During my interview process at different organizations, I did not find my motivation levels boosted, rather it gave me the feeling that I do not know much! This convinced me even more that I 'should' move out of my current organization or to rather put it as 'move outa the comfort zone I have created here myself'. After attending couple of interviews, I eventually cleared the interviews with one organization. During the process, there were numerous occasions where I had to step out of work for as long as 2 hours and I did all that without informing anyone, since by then I had made up my mind to quit!

When I did get the offer in hand I met my immediate supervisor over coffee, and told him about my decision to quit. He was rather unhappy, asked me if there was anything he could do since that will be the question from next levels. This put me off, since it somewhere did show that he was not interested in me resigning or staying back. However, he suggested I talk to his boss, who was the person who hired me to this organization. I was furious, that I was doing too many things, not getting paid and that my efforts were not getting realized plus the frustration of nothing new to do! I called up my ex boss and bluntly told him I wanted to put down my papers. I have to give a quick recap of my ex boss and me here. From the day I joined in this organization, he helped me learn. Never showed me how to do things, but rather forced me to learn things on my own. He ensured I was always on my toes, and my thirst to learn new things was quenched while I was reporting to him. This was close to 3.6 years and we had a very good understanding about each other, to such an extent that I was the only person who till date has the advantage of telling any negative feedback about him on his face! Such is our comfort zone and I highly doubt if there is any of my other colleagues who enjoy such privilege! He was more than a boss, took care of me and was concerned about my family as well. My dad at times remarks that he acts like my elder brother! I was expected to keep my boss posted if I was working late, he would ensure am taken care if am sick and so many little things that do matter more for an employee.

So when I stated about my decision to quit, he was rather surprised. I was in for a surprise when he asked me what is the offer and what is my new role gonna be! He did not ask for the reason for me to decide to quit from here in the first place. When I explained what the role was going to be, he just told me, if you take up that offer, you are only going to disappoint me! I do not want you to screw up this growth you have had here for an offer which is the same role in another organization. In a matter of 2 days, I had a new role and a new comp and a promise to change my reporting to my ex boss!! Well, when I did sit back and thought about it, I realized it was nothing but, my frustration with my new boss that made me decide to quit. The frustration had built on for a while and had it not been for the discussion with my ex boss I would have by now joined another firm. I would have equally disappointed the seniors in the team since I have worked with all of them in multiple projects and they always see me as the person to go to.

It dawned on me that employees do leave the managers and not the organization a theory that has been debated in our world for ages.

Vive!
ME MYSELF :)
