The Menace- Kunststoff
I wasn't trying to create a covfefe on the title. We Indians have a special capability of inventing the most unhealthy dishes with the key ingredient being the most healthy stuff. Recently, when I was out with my fiance, we ordered for a fruit bowl at a popular eatery. In came our fruit bowl in less than 2 minutes- a whole lot of Mangoes, a piece of banana, a grape, a piece of watermelon & a little pomegranate on a scoop of Icecream (!) served in a Kunststoff bowl. Aah! should I worry about the fruits on icecream now or should I worry about the even more eye popping Plastic bowl?! (yes- Kunststoff is Plastic in German, Thank you Google)
There was a hue and cry in Namma Bengaluru few months back on plastic being banned in almost everything. Shops which earlier charged 5 INR per cover started giving away carry bags freely since the Government threatened on imposing fine to any firm/establishment that stocks up plastic carry bags or sells goods/items covered in plastic. What a welcome move! While the many environmentalist were enthused about the move, trouble started brewing when we realized that the so called Cloth bags (which are charged at 2/5 per bag INR) had even higher % of Plastic in them. The latest of the Plastic Menace was the 'Plastic Egg' and 'Plastic Rice' episode. We made the best of it and passed around some interesting viral nonsense on how Rice balls will bounce if they are plastic (though we knew this is a natural process). Oh, how we love such drama and panic! A funny comment that I read on this was about a man crying out- somebody start a Plastic Upma episode please!
I happened to be at a well known hotel group for a HR Professional meet that was planned for 2 days. Across all tables, there were beautiful Plastic Water bottles that could hold just 250 ml of drinking water per bottle!! I almost fainted thinking I had to spend the whole day there. My mind did a quick mental calculation, considering on an average a person drinks 2.5 liter water and we were around 30 of us! I shuddered seeing bags of plastic bottles removed and replaced every two hours! I could no longer take this and requested if they could serve water for me in a glass. The assistant happily agreed and for a minute I was relieved until I saw him open a fresh bottle, empty the content in a glass and serve me with a smile!
There are gazillions of articles, news, documentaries that talk in length about the menace that Plastic creates in the environment. Unfortunately, many a times we decide to be 'The educated illiterates' and enjoy buying plastic, eat on plastic, sleep on plastic, even dress on plastic and at times burn plastic at the cost of bringing down the environment. Sadly, only 1 to 3% of the plastic bags produced are recyclable according to a recent survey. And this is against a whooping figure of 1,60,000 plastic bags used around the world every SECOND!!
I believe we are too chilled out for the alarms to ring, since research says the impact will be decades later. All I can hope, pray and wish for each of us is to wake up before we hear a final warning that says the end arrived too soon!! Screaming out loud again and again- Change starts within..
May the force be with us!
Vive!
