Instant Post on an Instant day
One of the day's while I was riding to work in the usual slow moving traffic, there was this erratic honking by a fellow Indian for a long time. I wasn't sure what he expected. Even if all the vehicles stopped moving ahead and gave him way to move forward, there was not even a bleak chance of him reaching his destination, wherever it was so hurriedly he was rushing to. Unless it was nature's call, I couldn't fathom why he was in a hurry.
And then there was another incident much later. At home, while delivering our weekly veggies, the Bigbasket delivery person was checking through the list of items and realized he had left two products back in his vehicle. He profusely apologized and said he will get them immediately and dashed out. Usain Bolt probably would have seen a competitor that day while me and my husband were perplexed on why he was in a hurry. He came back, handed over the two items, apologized over and again and then came his request 'Sir, feedback beda sir, 300 rs salary alli kammi agithe'! (he was requesting us to not give any bad feedback since it would cost him 300 rs from his salary). We were flabbergasted, more so wondered if that 3 minutes extra he had taken was such a huge crime. By the time we could enquire anything further, he was already back to his vehicle for the next delivery hoping no 'feedback' comes-by.
Fast forward today, after the disastrous latest release of my favorite music Director, I was craving to go back to his songs of 90's. Songs that changed the whole world for kids like me, that gave us a new meaning to music. I went on a 90's spree, sang along (surprisingly still remembering the lyrics from my childhood days), and it was such a mood lifter. I felt the songs he composes now is 2X faster than how it was back then to please the 'Instant' audience.
There are rarely any moments we soak in- enjoying the sunrise or the sunset or the full moon or even star gazing (you are lucky if you get to see any of these from your balcony). There is no slowing down and the world is pushing us to run faster when we are already twice at the pace of what we were a decade ago. There is no patience for kids these days since they grow up seeing parents either busy typing on the laptops or mobile phone. Take this for an example, one of the days after my morning walk, I saw a kid, a teenager, who missed his school bus by a whisker. What followed was him cussing the bus driver on the road. For a second I went back to my school days and thought about how I would have reacted. I would have maybe cried but immediately rushed for the public transport.
The challenge with this instant world, is the expectation of instant results. There is no question of the 10000 hours golden rule of Malcolm Gladwell that is evident these days. When instant results do not come by, we are forced into a self created world of Depression. The cases of Depression in the last decade has grown multi-fold and this the instant is cited as one of the major reasons. We are no longer creating a world of people who are mentally strong, who can take up challenges, or face any adversity for that sake. When I can instantly return an item I don't like at the click of a button and instantly get a new one with another click, am sure not trained to understand what 'waiting' for something is all about.
If we are today cursing ourselves for not seeing that decision a dear friend made to end his/her life, then it is this world of instant that has to be blamed. Even going out with friends for a conversation these days is tied to the pics I can post later on Instagram and then start worrying when my desired number of likes and comments don't come by, within hours. The whole pleasant feeling of catching up with the friend itself is lost.
May be, it is time for all of us to slow down. Forget about those instant delights, which gives only a few seconds of Dopamine since we are already burdened with the thought of social likes. May be its time to lift our heads from the screen and really do enjoy conversing with friends without worrying about the Instagram stories. The world can wait, while you truly enjoy yourselves. May be, it is time to understand the true value of 'Patience', wait at the signals and not jump those traffic signals or drive on the wrong side. May be, it is time to wait another 10 minutes for a delivery guy. May be, it is time for us to be become more Human and less machines.
Cheers!
